Right. My Hugh Laurie trip story.

I live in The Netherlands, but I went to Manchester to see Hugh Laurie in concert there. There were a couple of my (best) internet friends going there too (Steph and Mary), so we were excited about going and meeting each other. Actually we wanted to go to the Hugh Laurie concert in London, but we didn’t get tickets at the presale and the tickets at the regular sale sold out in 4 minutes!!! Afterwards it was better, because Mélanie and Olivia were also going to Manchester :)
We were discussing which concert we then wanted to go to, when we found out that the Manchester tickets were already on sale (we thought the sale started at 13:00 not 11:00) and we managed to get the last 3 tickets on a row. It was a real madness, because you could buy only 2 tickets per person and the third ticket we wanted disappeared! But it reappeared luckily ^^

Well, I met my friends on Thursday 5 May who were just as nice as they appeared online, but I shan’t bother you with stories about that.

Saturday 7 May
Concert day! We went shopping in the morning, ate lunch and then walked to the concert hall, where we arrived around 16:30. I still could hardly believe that Hugh Laurie was going to be there in a couple of hours and the fact that it wasn’t announced with posters anywhere didn’t help either. When we were eating we kept a close eye on a hallway which led to the hall and every time I saw a security guard or somebody with walkeetalkies I could feel the excitement in my stomach. We finished our dinner quickly and went to meet Olivia and Mélanie who were already there. We sat outside where we thought that Hugh Laurie was going to park before the soundcheck and just talked about Hugh, House and other things in the mean time ^^ There were a couple of other people waiting there too (2 from Ireland and some people who get autographs to sell them on the internet), but we were by far the biggest Hugh fans. I can’t remember exactly when, but we saw people running to the right, so we ran too and… HUGH WAS THERE! People were getting autographs and pictures, but I was just so stunned that all I could do was stare. I did turn my camera on while running, but my mind went blank and I didn’t take any pictures. Luckily Steph could think and made two pictures:


I actually believe that Hugh is looking at me in the first picture, because I was standing somewhere in that direction and he did look at me briefly! This didn’t help of course to getting control of my limbs back.
So we were standing only meters away from Hugh, but he said that he had to go inside and that he would come back later. My mind was still blankish, so I couldn’t ask if we could just have a quick picture. I’ve never been so speechless before. I’m actually a bit shy, but usually my mind isn’t blank ;) So Hugh was gone and my daydreams of being cool while talking to Hugh casually were shattered. I also fear now that I won’t be able to speak or move when I meet a band member of U2 of which I’m a bigger fan than Hugh Laurie.
We waited at the door until the doors for the concert opened and still hoped that Hugh Laurie would come back, because we weren’t with that many and Simon (who turned out to be the stage guy/waiter) said that he would talk to the security guys. After a while a guy who arrived later said that Hugh Laurie was walking up the stairs (there were windows), but at first we didn’t believe him, because he joked before that Jesse Spencer would be there. So when I did look he was almost out of sight. Almost :)

We were far away, but so close.
I made some pictures, but it was hard to keep my hands from shaking, so most of them turned out blurry, but these are the best ones:

Blues and Jazz is not music I listen to a lot, but I love Hugh’s album and everything was just better live! EV-E-RY-THING. The band was truly amazing. There were some incredible guitar/saxophone/bass solos. And Hugh’s speeches and faces: loved them.

At the end of the last song, we rushed to the door where Hugh Laurie would come for autographs and we were practically on the first row!!! I had a House t-shirt with me (Bird Brain) which I wanted Hugh to sign. Well first the equipment was moved into a van and a little later a guy came out saying something like “It’s raining so Hugh Laurie….” I couldn’t listen to the rest, because Hugh was standing next to him and made a silly face! Again: all I could do was stare, but when the people started to get autographs I held my t-shirt over somebody else and he recognized it!!!! He said “Wow…” and found a spot to sign. I got my t-shirt back, walked to somewhere quieter and then I dared to look at it :P It is so awesome!! ^^ I’m completely happy :D

We saw Kevin Breit the guitarist walking somewhere near the van and made a little chat with him and he signed my t-shirt too! :)
When Hugh was gone, we bought some more dinner and went to our hotel to watch the videos and especially this one:

Oh it was so nice AWESOME to go to a concert with fellow fans ^^
Now I really want to go to another concert, but that might be a while.

Conclusion:

1. Hugh Laurie is AWESOME!
2. I’m a bigger Hugh Laurie fan than I thought (it really makes me wonder how I’ll react if I ever meet U2, because I’m the biggest fan of them) and seeing and ‘meeting’ him made me a bigger fan.

During the whole concert I will be in the front row close to where The Edge is playing. At the end of Love Is Blindness Bono pulls me up the stage and dances with me. I tell him how much I love them and that this has been the best birthday of my life. Bono congratulates me and when the song is finished he says: “Do you still know how to play Party Girl The Edge?” Then they play Party Girl and dedicate it to me!

U2 dreams

1. After the U2 concert in Brussels I’m walking outside, but all the merchandise is sold out and I’m a bit sad, because I wanted to buy things. Then it starts raining hard and the river starts overflowing, so that’s distracting me from the merchandise :P 19 September 2010
2. I’m at a concert and U2 is playing New Year’s Day and Bono is drumming! However The Claw is being dismantled and suddenly it’s gone. A lot of concert goers think the concert is over and are leaving the stadium. I can still see Bono who is looking a little baffled so I’m definitely not leaving. Bono is walking around the empty field and starts singing “40″ with the “Oh Oh Oh” from Moment Of Surrender. The field is already empty, but the people in the higher seats who weren’t gone yet now return to their seats. Bono saw that I did not try to leave and smiled at me! :) 17 October 2010
3. I’m again at the Brussels concert and U2 is playing Mysterious Ways. It sounds however as a mix of Brussels and the version from Slane Castle. 18 October 2010
4. U2 announced another Europe leg, but again they didn’t come to the Netherlands. They did plan a concert in Belgium (some place beginning with an S) and I make up my mind that I’m going there although I never heard of the place before. The rest of the concerts are mostly in East Europe and one is also in a place called Anna. I feel I should also go to that concert, but well I had no idea in what country the city Anna lies :P 20 October 2010
   
5. I’m in a forest and see a little house there. It’s for sale and suddenly I ‘remember’ that that house used to belong to Bono, so I HAD to buy it XD I started a bakery there and hoped that Bono would heard of the news and decide to visit. 7 November 2010
6. House is hallucinating again and this time Amber is not his subconscious, but Bono. House doesn’t realise that Bono is a hallucination so he is not worried at all, but just chatting with Bono. Then Bono suddenly starts bleeding and House starts diagnosing him. While House is checking Bono’s eyes and doing those sort of test I’m getting more confused by the second, because unlike House I do know that Bono is House’s subconscious and well I find it all very strange. I’m also starting to get worried for House’s health, because it can’t be good for you if your own subconscious is ill. 9 November 2010

1. There was an article in the newspaper about a House fanvideo, so I was looking for scissors to cut it out. I also had a vague plan of delivering the article to the person who made the video, but that didn’t happen. 28 September 2010

I went to U2 in Brussel on 23 September! My third U2 concert ever (I went to the 2 concerts in Amsterdam last year).

I live in The Netherlands and had to go to the concert by train (took 4 hours). If it were closer I would have loved to have gone to both concerts, but now I just went on Thursday.

Long before the concert I said that the ONE song I really wanted to hear was Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me. Of course I like every U2 song and would like to hear every song I haven’t heard live, but that was THE song I wanted to hear.

I arrived at +- 17:45 in Brussel and took the underground to the stadium and bought two U2 posters there :)

I had a ticket for the section 1H so I was up high, but with a really good view (better than at Amsterdam).

Interpol went on at 19:45 and played until +- 20:30. I did not know Interpol at all before the concert, but when I got a ticket (in August this year) I listened to some of their songs.

It rained so there were these tents on the stage

To me almost all of the songs they played sounded similar, but it was a nice rocking sound :) The crowd was pretty quiet unlike with Snow Patrol last year. Snow Patrol was way better, but Interpol was nice to hear too.

At the concert in Brussel the day before the full moon was visible and Bono sang about that, but on Thursday the only time I saw the full moon was during Interpol and it was only for about half a minute. The rest of the time it was cloudy and raining (I had a roof above me).

When Interpol was over some time later the screen had to be fixed (some parts were black instead of giving light). You can see that in the picture (the 4th purple bit in the middle from the top is not working properly). There were 2 guys who did some magic and it worked again after that :)

At around 21:00 there were waves going round the stadium and soon after that died out I suddenly realised that I sat very close to where U2 were going to get out! I really hadn’t thought of it before and the next 30 minutes went by SLOWLY! Also 1 seat behind me and 3 seats to the left of mine were empty (so I had more room for me to make crazy movements! ;) ) The people in front of me were almost all sitting during the entire concert (the guy in front of me didn’t even clap!!!), but I was standing and singing my lungs out. I have never clapped harder in my life :P

Mysterious Ways is one of my favourite favourite U2 songs and just LOVE it live. I’m really glad this was in the setlist! Bono also took a girl from the crowd on stage and walked/skipped with her on the stage :)

After I still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For Bono said: “Let’s play a new song… This could be a hit *harmonica*” Me: SOMETHING NEW? A new  song that starts with harmonica?!!!! I LOVE it when Bono plays Harmonica! This is my lucky day! :D But then Edge started playing guitar and realised that it wasn’t something completely new, but Angel Of Harlem. But it was still completely awesome :)

I was incredibly happy when I heard the first notes of Bad. Bono played guitar and it was a mind blowing live version. At the end you could see that Bono wanted to snippet something, but then Larry ended the song. Bono turned round and kept playing his guitar and Edge quickly joined him. Bono sang Singing In The Rain and Adam and Larry also joined in again. It was incredible.

House

1. I’m sitting on the couch watching a new House episode. My mother says that House is going to put something green on his bread and eat it and that I should know what that green stuff is. I think “Oh no!!! He’s going back on vicodin! He’s going to disguise it as something green and put it on his bread! Don’t do it House!”. House is in the meantime walking from the elevators through the hallway when a woman says “Hi House” to him. House thinks “Oh no” and the woman asks if House would diagnose her. House feels her neck and says that she is too thin (that’s the diagnosis). The woman replies that House is good looking. That comment confirmed my beliefs that House was back on vicodin. 2 May 2010
   
2. House walks into a room full of medical students and picks 2 for his new team: a woman with short hair and a short man. House then asks if somebody “plays keys”. One of the students is also a music teacher, but he doesn’t play keys very well. House and the music teacher leave the room and immediately see a piano. The student says that he can play a little and plays a little on the piano. House goes after him and plays something geniously. He says very loud (so the students in the other room can hear him) “You’ve got 10 minutes left.” He goes to his office and looks boredly around him.  2 May 2010

Cuddy was upset and didn’t understand why, because Rachel is very sweet. When Cuddy was out of the room House was with Rachel and there was some water dripping from the floor above onto Rachel’s jacket and House had an epiphany. Rachel was teased because Rachel’s jacket smelled of ‘old water’ (it truly made a lot of sense in my dream, I was in awe of House’s brilliance). House then said  “Boys don’t lie.” to Rachel.
    The next moment House, Cuddy and Rachel are on a plane and House and Cuddy are discussing holiday plans. Rachel then said “Teenage boys don’t lie.” House was surprised and happy and from then on only paying attention to Rachel.  21 July 2010

16. House and Cuddy are dating, but House says that Cuddy needs to be re-initialised before he moves in with her (?!). Well when Cuddy is re-initialised she doesn’t know House any more. House realises he might have made a mistake and then he hears the doorbell. He knows it is himself who is going to ask Cuddy to re-initialise herself. Somebody else is going to open the door and House tackles him. Everything is then back to normal. (Doesn’t make much sense does it?) 3 September 2010

1. I’m in Paris for the U2 concert, and when I get out of the underground I see Madame Tussauds. I go in there and I find Bono there :) 17 May 2010
2. Somebody is selling a bass guitar that looks very much like one from Adam. It isn’t, because it is very bendable. 20 May 2010
3. Bono wins an stage in the Giro d’Italia. (there actually was someone called Bono in the Tour de France, but in this dream it was the real Bono cycling) 23 May 2010
4. I’m going shopping and when I come back home somebody on msn tells me that U2 were in Amsterdam and that I’ve now missed them :( 19 August 2010
5. I’m backstage at a U2 concert and I meet U2 there when they are finished :) Ali is also there. 25 August 2010

Stephen walks around and admires everyone’s drawings :) One person had to do some accounting and he gets something from Stephen at the end. I’m quite jealous of that. Hugh was all the time also drawing something and at the end they say that if they had some more time they would have done sketches. I wished they hadn’t said that, because would have liked seeing sketches better than drawing. 15 August 2010

1. I’m at a U2 360 concert and I’m standing under the Claw. I look up and notice that the roof of the Claw is stunning. I now look on the screen and I want to take a picture of it, but when I get my camera I see that Bono is really close, so I stretch out my hand and he lifts me up upon the stage!!! Adam, Edge and Larry are also standing next to me and they stop playing to say hi to me :D I give someone in the crowd my camera so he could make a photo with me and the band! 10 February 2010
2. I’m buying tickets for the U2 concert in Paris. 8 March 2010
3. I’m at the university, but it’s very noisy in the class. Another teacher walks in and wants to say something. Everybody is talking so they don’t notice him, but then he starts to sing Into The Heart. He immediately has my attention :P  17 March 2010

5. Me and Bono are following Edge in a car (Bono is driving). There are a lot of hills and we lose Edge. We think it was because Edge drove too hard, but than we realise that Edge would never do that so we go for the theory that he has just magically disappeared. We go somewhere else and Bono is going to give a concert there. There are already a lot of people and Bono climbs a ladder in the middle of the crowd and starts singing. I want to go to the ladder too, but it’s impossible to get there with all the fans surrounding the ladder. I take of my shoes and I have to hide there somewhere(?). Then I see someone coming and I need to quickly put on my shoes again, but it went nightmarishly slow. I did manage it and I have a new plan. The person I saw was Beyonce (or Madonna) and she is walking towards the stage. I just follow here and I can reach the ladder, because everybody makes room for her. I climb the ladder and when I’m at the top where Bono is I say “Hi!”. Bono is very happy to see me. He holds my hand so he doesn’t have to hold the ladder any more. While it was fun to hold Bono’s hand I felt an enormous responsibility, because if I let go he would fall to the ground. We see the singer of AC/DC coming and climbing the ladder. When he’s at our level he asks what I’m doing there. He doesn’t want me there, but Bono says that I’m staying there, so he leaves. Bono continues singing and than I see Bruce Springsteen! I say “Kijk kijk! Het is Bruce Springsteen!” (Look look! It is Bruce Springsteen!) I realise I said it in Dutch, but Bono smiles and understood it :) Bruce climbs the ladder and begins to laugh. 20 March 2010

7. I’m in a church and someone plays With Or Without You on the organ. Someone else says “Hey that’s Hallelujah!” Me: “No it’s With Or Without You!” The teacher than confirmed I was right and asks me if I want to play on the organ, which I do :)  26 March 2010

10. At university a girl asks how she should best listen to U2. She’s behind a computer, so I say “If you want to listen to them now, you could go to YouTube…” In exchange for this wisdom of mine she gives me some notes she made XD 12 April

1. There is something with House’s leg and because of that he loses his cane skills. 9 February 2010
2. House, Cuddy and Lucas are sitting on a couch and House is mainly talking to Cuddy about how it’s not fair that she’s dating Lucas, because he loves her. *awww* Cuddy isn’t answering, but I know she’d rather date House. House also yells “I GOT YOU!” 9 February 2010
3. It’s Christmas and Foreman gives House a present (in Cuddy’s office). House says: “The advantage of being a doctor for a long time [something]” It all came down to the point that House knew what was in the present and he wanted something else. House also gave a very fake laugh which was actually very funny. Foreman left and he came back with a huge Christmas tree. 9 February 2010
